Applications are invited from postgraduate research students (PGRs) for travel and research grants (maximum £1000 in any one year) to help support research work carried out in connection with doctoral level research projects. The aim of the Trust is to make awards either to support students’ travel and other costs to their fieldwork area or to contribute to expenses incurred in conducting library or archival research.
Applicants should state clearly in 1000 words in total:
i) the nature of the proposed project;
ii) the contribution the project will make to anthropological understanding;
iii) the practical arrangements which have been made;
iv) the purpose to which the grant will be put;
v) a breakdown of the estimated total costs of the project.
The nature of the project, the contribution it will make to anthropology, and the kinds of question the research will address need to be spelled out clearly to the committee.
A statement of support from the applicant’s supervisor should accompany an application.
Candidates must confirm that they have applied, or intend to apply, for ethical approval of the research project. They should notify the Trust as soon as approval has been granted. Funding is conditional on ethics clearance and a satisfactory risk assessment.
Applications, including an email address, should be submitted on the application form to the School Office (pgpafs(at)st-andrews(dot)ac(dot)uk) and copied to ladislavhm(at)gmail(dot)com , by 12.00 noon, First Week of Second Semester, 15th March 2027.
Successful applicants will be expected to submit a 500-word report to be sent to PAFS Research and the Trust after the completion of research, detailing how the grant was used. Please address in your report the five points referred to in your application (see above) and tell the Trustees how progress was made on each.
